About the university

Established in 1963, the University of York is a high-performing, research-intensive university and a member of the elite Russell Group. York is one of only four UK universities who hold an overall rating of Gold under the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF, 2023) and are ranked in the top 10 of the Research Excellence Framework (REF, 2021). With three faculties and over 250 postgraduate courses on offer, there’s something for everyone at York.
York is the proud home of over 20,000 students from more than 150 countries, each contributing to their diverse community. Every student who joins York becomes a member of one of their 11 colleges. Each college has its own history and character, but they all provide the same services and opportunities. Your college is the foundation for getting involved in campus life and a gateway to exploring the wider University community.

The University of York campus is only a short distance from the city centre. From Campus West it takes 15-minutes to cycle, 30-minutes to walk or is a 15-minute bus journey from the city centre. When you choose to study at York, the historic and beautiful city becomes your home.
Ranked the second-safest city in England and Wales (Get Licensed Safe City Index, 2023), York is large enough to be lively, yet small enough to be friendly and welcoming. York is well-located for exploring the rest of the UK, too. By train, the city is only two-hours from London, two-and-a-half-hours from Edinburgh and one-and-a-half-hours from Manchester, so it’s easy to have a weekend away or day-trip from York.
